Lesson 2. Create a document in Google Drive (Google Docs)

In this lesson I will show you how to create a document on Google Drive which you can also edit, download to your computer or share it online with other people.

To create a document you have to log in to your Google account and open Google Drive first.
If you haven't got a Google account yet, please see Lesson 1 "How to create Google Account and access Google Drive". Otherwise, read the instructions below and complete activity and assignment after that.

Note: You can click on an image to enlarge it.

Log in to Google Drive

Open your web browser and go to google.com and click "Sign in" button in the top right corner as you can see on the image below.

When you click "Sign in" button, it will re-direct you to a page with the sign in form. Enter you email address and the password you have used for creating your Google account and click the "Sign in" button.

Note: You can also type gmail.com in your web browser to open a page with the sign in form. It doesn’t matter which way you follow as Google uses the same email address for ALL its services.

When you are logged in to your Google account, find Apps icon in the top right corner and click on the Drive icon from the drop down menu as you can see on the image below.

Create and edit a document

When you open Google Drive you will see a "Create" button which allows you to create a new document. Click this button and choose "Document" from the drop down menu as shown on the image below.

Congratulations! You have just created your first Google document!

Don't worry about saving your document as Google Drive saves it automatically every time changes are made. However, it's a good practice to add a proper name to your document. You just need to click on "Untitled document" at the top of the screen.

Enter a new name in the "Rename document" text box as shown on the image below and click OK button.

You will see that your new name appeared at the top of the document.

Now you can add your content and edit it in a similar way as in Microsoft Word or other text editors. Google provides powerful editing tools which allow you to style your content, insert images, create tables etc. Feel free to explore and experiment!

When you finish with creating and editing your content you can return to Google Drive home page by clicking on the blue document icon in the top left corner as shown on the image below.

You can always open your document for editing by clicking on the name of the document in Google Drive.

Delete a document

To delete a document, tick the check box next to it and click on the "Trash" icon that will appear at the top.

Note: You can select as many documents as you want.

Your deleted document will be moved to the Trash. If you want to delete it permanently, click on the Trash link on the left, select the document and click "Delete forever" button.

Note: You will have to confirm that you want to delete it permanently by clicking "Delete forever" button from the pop up screen.

Before deleting a document permanently, you can still restore it by clicking "Restore" button.

Download document on your computer

You can also download your document to your computer by following the steps below:

Select the document you would like to download and click on "More" button that will appear at the top.

From the drop down menu select Download option as shown on the image below.

The pop up screen will appear which allows you to convert your document to various file formats and download it. Select a preferred format and click Download button.

The document will be downloaded to your computer.

In this lesson I have covered only the main options and functionality which will help you to start using Google Drive for creating and editing documents.
